MJI Growth Continues with Addition of Jason Mateychuk
We are thrilled to announce the newest addition to our team—Jason Mateychuk—who is the new Coordinator of the Manitoba Junior Ice program with continued support from Kim Hynes (PLAY Hockey Female Director) and Chet Pickard (Western Canada Events Manager). With a wealth of experience and a passion for the game, Jason is set to lead our program and have many great seasons ahead.
A Proven Track Record
Jason brings a stellar track record to our program across both Sports and Education. With 16 years of experience as the Principal at Roseau Valley School in Dominion City, MB, Jason is no stranger to working with both youth and their families. He also brings 35 years of Coaching in both Hockey and Baseball and has consistently demonstrated an ability to inspire players and foster a growth mentality.
Hockey runs in the Family
Jason and his wife Keela have 5 children. His eldest son Maddux played competitive hockey but chose baseball where he played for the Junior National Team and headed down to Myrtle Beach, SC to continue playing. His son Denton, was drafted 12th overall (2022 NHL Entry Draft) by the Columbus Blue Jackets and is the captain of the Moose Jaw Warriors. He was also named WHL playoff MVP after leading all defensemen in scoring with 30 points. His next son Kasen played U15 and U18 AAA hockey in and is currently attending the Moose Jaw Warriors Training Camp. His youngest son, Crosby Mateychuk is an MJI alumnus and is currently set to play for the Eastman Selects U15 AAA team. Finally, his Daughter Brylee Mateychuk has played for and excelled with the MJI Program over multiple seasons.
Philosophy
What sets Jason apart is his commitment to a player-first approach. His philosophy revolves around developing strong fundamentals, emphasizing teamwork, while having fun. He believes in creating an environment where players can thrive both on and off the ice, ensuring that they not only grow as athletes but as individuals.
Growth Within Our Program
Rhys Van Kemanade, PLAY Hockey’s Chief Hockey Officer had this to say about the new addition. “ With Jason in his new role, our program is entering an exciting new chapter. His focus on youth development and a commitment to community engagement gives us confidence that he will bring the energy, expertise, and leadership to continue the standards our program has set in being the premier spring Hockey experience in Manitoba.”
